A new itinerary: Behind the Bazaar - From Beyazit to Fener
April 21st 09:30 meeting place: Beyazit tram stop
(near the end of the tram coming from Eminonu).
We will start at the second hand book Bazaar, and through some caravansaries onto a spectacular rooftop to observe the morning light over the Bosphorus.
A walk through the Universities' back streets and a visit to the Kalenderhane mosque, originally a 7th century Byzantine church with beautiful colored marble panels: Continuing through the picturesque neighborhood of Vefa we make a stop at the perfectly preserved historical cafe, over to the Valans Aquaduct where men sit under it's arches sipping tea, we finish this part walking through the meat market street and with a short taxi ride to the Greek Patriarch, Lunch in the quaint Forno restaurant of Fener and up to the Greek Orthodox church of Mary of the Mongols which is back to back with the wonderful Red Greek school overlooking the Golden Horn.

We will start off at Beyazit and walk down through the Book Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar to have an early view of the city from a rooftop where we will continue onto the Suleymania mosque through the back streets, over to the aquaduct and down to the Greek patriarch and Fener.
Galata/Karakoy/Golden Horn photography Friday March 27th
meeting place: Galata Tower 10 am
Starting at the sq. under the tower, we will move on down the back streets through the San Piyer Han, (an abandoned French caravan saray ) and on to the Russian orthadox church at the top of an apt. building in Karakoy. We will then catch the ferry that zig zags up the Golden Horn and wandering through the characteristic streets in the process of great transformation, we will visit the Byzantine church of Mary of the Mongols and the Greek Patriarch. On the way we will stop for lunch in a local restaurant.

We will start off strolling through Kadikoy's colorful fish market, and to the Armenian chapel then over to a lessor known section of Kadikoy called Yeldegirman, with it's scattered 19th cent. architecture, and gigantic murals on random buildings..
We will then go on to Kuzguncuk: This quaint Bosphorus village, known for it's religious tolerance and traditional wooden houses is now filled with small cafe's and curious shops and many artists,.There we visit the Greek cemetery and lunch in a family run restaurant.

The subject was a documentary film to be shot on World Wood Day in March, both in Eskisehir and in Istanbul.www.worldwoodday.org, The Istanbul venue is still to be found, the director and team were a group of extremely charming people from Tawian.
The city was magical as usual.

Asian Walk: From Kadikoy to Kuzguncuk
Tuesday, February 3rd at 10 am.
Meeting point: Kadikoy Port (Besiktas Iskele)
This new walk of mine brings you to the colorful fish market and over to an unknown section of Kadikoy, Yeldegirman, with it's interesting 19th cent. architecture, and gigantic murals that have remained from an International festival last year.
From there we will go on to Kuzguncuk: A stroll through this quaint Bosphorus village, known for it's religious tolerance and traditional wooden houses. There is a Greek cemetery and if there is interest, we can visit to the local synagogue built in 1878.
Lunch in a family run restaurant.

Anyone who hasn't had the chance to join me yet, Monday morning is a perfect time to stroll around the Bazaar before the crowds hit. We will go down it's back streets through alleyways, into it's ancient Caravansary's and onto rooftops. We will also have a chance to visit the traditional craft workshops.
When we finish, there is an optional lunch in a local restaurant from the Southeastern city of Mardin.

Meeting Point: Uskudar Port (Cem Bufe)
At 10:30 I have arranged for a small boat to pick us up in Cengelkoy, and we will go slowly up to Anadolu Kavagi, where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. Along the way, we can photograph the Yali's and palaces, stopping where we like. It will take roughly an hour and a half.
From Anadolu Kavagi we will take a bus back down to Kanlica, where we will have a home made lunch in the garden of the Turkish artist Fusun Ocal.After lunch, a short walk over to Hidriv Kasr, the art nouveau residence of the Egyptian Governor, where I will try to get permission to climb up the tower and we might find some brides posing for photographs in the rose garden.
Lots of new stuff to see, different atmospheres and more Istanbul contrasts to photograph. Plus, it will be lots of fun. This trial trip will have some extra expenses, and is limited to only 6 people.
